Two research professors and one student doctor at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) have been awarded a grant of up to $5,000 by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).

Natalie Freeman, associate professor of biochemistry and assistant dean of research, is the primary investigator for the LMU-DCOM team. Anne Marie Zeller, associate professor of family medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine, and Ian Schultheiss, student doctor, are joining her as co-investigators.

The group is studying the correlation between visual spatial intelligence and palpatory ability using cutting-edge 3D printing technology. The project aims to enhance students' educational experience and clinical preparedness. Freeman said it was sparked by Schultheiss's innovative idea and benefits from Zeller’s expertise in Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) research, showcasing the strength of collaboration between students and faculty at LMU-DCOM.

“This initiative is expected to have far-reaching implications for osteopathic medical education, potentially benefiting generations of future physicians. It underscores LMU-DCOM's dedication to advancing innovative teaching methodologies and shaping the future of osteopathic medicine,” Freeman explained.

The team is one of three groups of researchers selected to receive grants by AACOM as recipients of the 2024 Research Grant Program. The program is designed to foster innovation and excellence in osteopathic medical education (OME) by supporting projects that address critical areas in medical education and institutional research.

The research is expected to be completed in 18 months. Then the findings will be shared with the broader OME community.

The DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine is located on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, and at LMU-Knoxville in Knoxville, Tennessee. LMU-DCOM is an integral part of LMU’s values-based learning community and is dedicated to preparing the next generation of osteopathic physicians to provide health care in the often-underserved region of Appalachia and beyond.
